Elisabeth Kübler-Ross may not have been talking about Mac's
Spinning Wheel of Death when she came up with the five stages of grief,
but anyone who has needed computer repairs at the worst possible time
(when does it ever come at any other time?) will be all too familiar
with the five steps in this little tango of emotion. And, of course,
they're followed by the inevitable sixth step of seeking out a computer
repairs expert.
1. Denial
"It's just loading. It will heal itself if I just walk away and give it some time." These are the sounds denial makes. We are all acutely aware that we have encountered a serious computer problem as soon as it happens. We know deep down that the issue calls for a serious computer repairs background, which so many of us do not have, in order to solve it. We know this by the sinking feeling in our stomach when we hear that strange noise come out of our speaker for the first time ever. Trust that feeling. Do not ignore it.

2. Anger
We berate ourselves for getting that English degree instead of studying programming. We berate our significant other for responding to our cries of rage by coming into the room all concerned, pretending he or she can help when even we knew to press control, alt, and delete. We berate our computer itself for forsaking us in this time of need.

3. Bargaining
When reality sinks in and anger subsides, we all begin to assure the great IT deity in the sky that if we can just get our data back, the first thing we will do is back it up. We intended to, we really did. We've been meaning to keep up with that for a long time, and this time things will change if we can just get a one-time, very generous, free pass. There is no such thing as a free pass in computer repairs. And once we realize this we move on to the next stage.

4. Depression
We sink into a dark, quiet contemplation. We ask ourselves why this computer has such sway over our lives. How many hours a week do we spend sitting in front of this thing, working our lives away, creating everything it seems we've just now lost? We ponder such questions as we sink further into inconsolable despair.

5. Acceptance
This is our lot in life and we have to face the facts and move on to the next step. We accept that we are undereducated, despite our doctorate degree in underwater basket weaving. We accept that we are woefully ignorant when it comes to advanced technology. We accept that our data is forever lost unless we can find someone else to give us hope.

6. Tech support
We finally call an actual computer repairs person.
