MLA Business Proposal - Logo, Business Card, Letterhead (300 points)

YOUR NEW BUSINESS:   (WHAT IMAGE DOES IT HAVE ON THE STREET?)
Read the following article:  http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/71902
Create a LOGO using photos, drawing, or any other medium.  Watch the video about why a LOGO is important (Click Here).  We can photograph your work and use it for creating stationary, flyers, business cards and other documents.  Tomorrow I will list specific instructions for creating Business Cards in MS Word and a Product Flyer in MAC Pages.

You can use the Free Logo Designer on LogoGarden / Vista Print to help you come up with an idea, but you will not be able to download your creation.  There are literally hundreds of other free websites to help you.  Pick one!  Once you have designed it on LogoGarden / VistaPrint, try to use a drawing program or PowerPoint to recreate your logo.  Once you have created it and saved it as a PICTURE, you should be able to use it to create all kinds of Business Documents for your new company.  We will focus on a creating a Business Card below.

LOGOGarden.com (Click Here) - Create and Download a Low-Res Logo for Free!!

VistaPrint Logo Designer (Click Here) - Create a Logo (No Free Download).

LOGO PROJECT:
You must create a LOGO for your new company.  This will be the symbol of your company and product line.  Think about what was mentioned in the video you saw above.  This LOGO will appear on all of your Business Documents and should reflect your Brand, Company, Products, and Ideas/Ideals.  Save a copy of this logo online.

 Business Card Project:
Using MS PowerPoint,  use the Business Card Template below to create a design for your Business Card.  Make the business cards have the same design elements and LOGO as the Sales Flyer you will create.  You should use the contact information of the School (see below) and your name, title (CEO, President, whatever), your email, and your weebly website account.  Be creative and save your final draft and email it to me.

Business Card Template PPT (Click Here)

Sales Flyer Project:
Using a Sales Flyer Template below in MS PowerPoint you will create a 1-page Sales Flyer for your business.  Include the business name, your weebly website, and your email.  Use our school's address and contact information (listed below).  Make sure you are creating a flyer that will use at least one picture, 2-3 paragraphs of text, and some design elements that are the same as other Business Documents you will be using.  When you are finished, email the flyer to me at hscribnercaa@gmail.com.

Sales Flyer Template PPT (Click Here)

Rubrics for the Flyer, Logo and Business Card will be posted in the next few days!!

Once you have completed the MLA Business Proposal, you will need to create a 3-5 slide presentation for your business.  You must present your business idea to the class as if we are investors and you need us to loan you the start up money to get things going.  Tell us why, in a short presentation, we should invest in your company over all the other projects in the room.  Be creative and have fun.

PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR LOGO, BUSINESS CARD, AND SALES FLYER BY EMAIL AS ATTACHMENT!  THE BEST WAY IS TO DOWNLOAD YOUR FILE FROM GOOGLE DRIVE AS A JPEG PICTURE FILE AND ATTACH IT TO AN EMAIL TO ME.   DO NOT SHARE THEM!  THEY SHOULD BE SUBMITTED IN JPEG FORMAT ONLY FOR CREDIT!

Good Luck!!

Merge PDF - Combine or clip PDF files in 3 steps.

Merge PDF

Cut, copy, paste – the best friends of a creative teacher aren’t exactly easy to do with PDFs.  Merge PDF allows you to cut pages from PDF documents and/or combine pages from multiple PDF files.

I wanted a digital version of just 4 pages from an 84 page PDF document, and wanted to combine those 4 pages with an additional page from a separate PDF file.  Merge PDF was able to accomplish this in just 3 steps, with no software to download.  The site also offers options to convert images to PDF, and PDF to image files.

WeVideo – a powerful, feature-filled online video editor.

    WeVideo

WeVideo offers a full-featured video editor with nothing to download or install.   K-12 plans include a “walled-garden” feature that can be used to address safety and privacy concerns by limiting sharing of student-generated videos.

Today, WeVideo announced the launch of their Education ChannelThe aim of this channel is to use curriculum-aligned online Film Fests to inspire students and “showcase the best global student videos.”  The channel also provides students with a source of royalty-free footage for use in the Film Fest Videos.

A free (limited)  plan is available with K-12 plans starting at $149/semester for 50 students.  The free account met the needs of my students for short videos.  A free semester-long pilot program is currently being offered to universities.

Looking for apps?  WeVideo is available on Androidand iOS.

43 days until the 2014 Cambridge Science Festival!

We're just over a month away from the 8th iteration of the Cambridge Science Festival.  Have you marked your calendars for April 18-27, 2014?  We'll see another Robot Zoo, print in 3D, develop video games, understand the science of archery or modern cocktails, eat science, discover technology in jazz and runway fashion!  Check out our Schedule of Events for more.

In other news, allow me to introduce the newest member of our Teen Advisory Board.

Kathi Marcos Allphin is a homeschooled student who lives on the North Shore. Her interests are far too numerous to list, but they include genetics, science communication, music, linguistics, and science fiction (particularly anything by Isaac Asimov). She writes a public science blog called Endoplasma at http://endoplasmablog.wordpress.com.

Here's her latest entry about the science festival!

    Filling the chasm
    by: Kathi Marcos Allphin

Far too often, the humanities and the arts are segregated from the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.

This unfortunate separation manifests itself in classrooms, bookstores, academia, and other workplaces, but also in other parts of our everyday lives. However, this separation is not beneficial for those stranded on either side of the divide.

The initiative needing to be taken is that of integration. It is crucial that people abandon their perception of the humanities and STEM as separate entities, and allow the fields to exchange ideas with one another for mutual benefit. I wholeheartedly believe that there is a staggering amount that can be reaped from an interdisciplinary approach. An interdisciplinary curriculum, an interdisciplinary life, an interdisciplinary world.

Imagine a world in which subjects such as the following were taught in schools: The effect of technology on family connectedness, Exploring the relationship between ebooks and the reader experience, Meet Billy the Bacteriophage: Telling Science with Stories.

Likewise, imagine a world in which these professions were prominent. Science Singer, Science Storyteller, Robopsychologist, and Technofamilial Researcher.

I recently became a member of Cambridge Science Festival’s Teen Advisory Board. The Cambridge Science Festival, which is held in Cambridge, MA during the public school’s April vacation, is an incredible, fun-filled experience.

Here are three events that capture the diversity of the offerings, Science en Español for preschoolers, an educator workshop on incorporating synthetic biology into the classroom, and a lecture on embodied cognition in music by a MacArthur (“Genius Grant”) Fellow, (not to mention the robot zoo.)

All of the events are awesome, and the vast majority are absolutely free of charge.

The mission of the Cambridge Science Festival, according to the website, is to promote and provide education about STEAM – related subjects. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. I applaud the Festival’s initiative to incorporate arts amidst the classic STEM. This speaks to a future in which STEM and humanities/arts can exchange pieces of wisdom with one another.

It is heartening to know that the youth of this generation will be exposed to more open-minded thinking on this subject. It is this train of thought (and action) that will transport today’s curious youth and help them to become the pioneers in science storytelling and robopsychology.
